Two Small Quilts

Every year our guild makes small quilts for Teddy Bears for Christmas Cheer Fund.  These are really neat to make because they are small and don't take a lot of time to make.  I like to piece so I often make a small quilt with a lot of piecing involved.

Baby Buckaroos

I bought an ebook on line from Martingale Publishing and this little quilt was in it.

I bought this fabric a few years ago when I visited my brother in

Tallahassee and didn't realize that it was tailor made for this quilt.  I made some magic 9 patch blocks in red this time.

I had made this quilt before but used blue 9 patches.

I think I like the red better because it sets the fussy cut squares off.

I actually sold this quilt yesterday.

I think it was the first one I have sold since I started quilting 10 years ago.

A friend called and asked if I had a quilt for a boy for her to take to a baby shower this weekend.

From Scraps to Scrappy

Working on scrap quilts keeps me busy.  I love to find new patterns and then sort through the scrap bins to come up with a quilt.  Sometimes I have to cut the pattern down to a size that I like working with so I have to choose patterns that I can do that too.  I like them to fit onto one piece of fabric for the backing and the usually size turns out to be 38-40 x 48-52 inches.  The size that will fit onto a wheelchair or a small lap quilt.

Jewel Toss

This quilt used up some of my 2 1/2 inch squares as well as some of my 5 inch squares to make the 4 1/2 inch half square triangles.  Check out Moda Bakeshop for more scrap quilts.  I think I have said this before, but as soon as I see the pattern using a charm pack I think of scraps.  I may have to make this one again, really like how it turned out.

Dog Lovers Quilt

I had this dog fabric that I hated to cut up so by making it into large squares I was able to use it without losing some of the doggy faces.  I good quilt for Precious Bundles.  I hope a little boy gets this one.

My Pineapple Log Cabin Quilt and Other Finishes

In April I took a class in making the Pineapple Block that was put on by Johanna Masko.  Our local guild invited her to be our guest quilter during our annual Quilt Show.  She put on three classes over the weekend.  She was making a block to make a cushion but I thought I would practice making the block and made 12 blocks to make a small quilt.  

Pineapple Log Cabin Quilt

The fabric was purchased in England and is made up of The Union Jack and other symbols of the United Kingdom.  There are Bobbie's, taxi cabs, crowns, pay phone booths, double decker buses and assorted landmarks all throughout the fabric.  I added a few of the assorted blues and reds but the theme fabrics are truly English.

Amazing Jelly Roll Quilt

This pattern is from the 3 Dudes and broken down by Missouri Star Quilt Company.  You take 4 strips and sew them together, measure the width of the strip and cut the strip into squares.  Take one and place it horizontal on your cutting board and place a different or same square vertically on top, sew all around the outside and cut it diagonally from corner to corner twice.  

I made one square and got hooked and before I knew it I had made 12.  I used the hinge method to put the squares together.  It is a quilt as you go method and goes together really quick.  It was completely made with scraps.

Floating Four Patch Quilt

I got this pattern idea from The Gourmet Quilter.  She was using up some scraps so I did the same and made a scrappy floating four patch quilt. This quilt measures 38 x 52 just the right size for a lap quilt for one of the Homes for the Aged.

Two Block Kid's Quilt

Strange as it may seem, that is the name of this quilt.  I got the pattern from All People Quilt when I was looking for a pattern for a child's quilt.  It was so easy just to use large square of assorted children's fabric that I had on hand and just added the coloured sashing.

New Baby Ensemble

One of my sisters is going to have a new grandchild, a little girl, and wanted me to make a quilt and a doll quilt for the mother and child.  She found a pattern called Doggy in the Window on Craftsy and we used the pattern but changed the block to a doll instead of a dog.  The fabric is Simply Gorjuss from Quilting Treasures.

I also made a doll quilt to go with this baby quilt.

I put a small block in this quilt to match the larger quilt.  The backing is the pink fabric.  You don't see it in the large quilt but I incorporated it into the small one to give it more colour.

I like to make a bag to go with all this and Carole had sent me a second piece of fabric so I used it for the bag with some leftover pink fabric.

I mailed it all of today so she should get it in a week or so.  Snail mail is so slow here in our town.  She needs it before September 15th so I thought I would get it finished and mail it in lots of time.

More Finishes

Our Guild does a lot of charity work and one of the news charities that we give to is called Precious Bundles.  This is a group who give quilts to those who need them for newborns or small children.  I used up some of my fabric that was leftover from my Charlie Brown Christmas quilt and made a small quilt for Precious Bundles.  I bought the blue and yellow fabric in Montreal on our last trip.

When we were in Tallahassee I bought great children's fabric at Hobby Lobby, so I made another small child's quilt.

Baby Buckaroos

My sister-in-law Judy gave me the following fabric a number of years ago and I couldn't figure out to do with it until I came across this pattern and it fits quite well.

The fabric features all quilting motifs.  I had to turn some sideways but it makes the quilt usable at any angle.

This quilt was in a book that I got for Christmas that uses pre-cuts so I used scraps.  A small lap quilt for one of the homes for the aged.

Two More UFO's Finished

This UFO Challenge that the guild put out to it's members has been very good for me.  I am keeping focused and have completed 2 more.

Twisted Shamrock

I started this little wall hanging a few years ago by sewing the squares together but never got around to cutting out the twister squares.  I had borrowed a small twister from a friend and still didn't complete it.  I think the push came when the challenge was announced.  Glad to have it finished just in time for St Patrick's day.

Tiny Bits

I had gathered all the children fabrics together for this one and even cut out a few of the squares but put it aside to start something else.  The pattern came from a book that I got for Christmas called "Perfect Quilts For Pre-cut Fabrics".  As soon as I saw the tittle I immediately thought of scraps.  You were suppose to use charm squares but I fussy cut some of my fabrics to showcase them.

A New Baby Quilt

My daughter asked me to make a Baby Quilt for a friend of hers.  She found one and I thought it would be a good one since it was just squares of baby fabric.  The reason she picked it was that she liked the quilting but it was all hand quilted so she didn't get that one.  

She found one in an old Fons and Porter Baby Quilts Magazine dated winter 2008.

A Star is Born

It was suppose to have small triangles around the edge to look like prairie points but instead I chose  small square. I like to change a pattern to make it my own so that was my little change to this one.

Another Baby Quilt

My sister Carole asked me to make a quilt for a new great grandson.  She picked out the pattern and the fabric at a local quilt shop in her home town,  The theme is bunnies and I had to asked her to send me new fabric because one of the fat quarters was white with very pale bunnies on it.  It all blended together and was very blah so she sent me the fabric with peach in it and the polka dots.  I like the new fabric better. 

The bunnies are appliqued to the same fabric as the border.  You can see a little bit of snow on the deck.  We were in the middle of a snowstorm but I just had to take the picture outside.  There is also ice on the deck left over from the rain yesterday.

The backing is bunnies that tie the quilt together.

I also made a small quilt 20 x 20 inches for a small stuffed bunny to go with the quilt.

There was still a bit of leftover fabric so I made a bag to put it all in.

Cora's Quilt

My sister Lynda has a new granddaughter so of course she needs a new quilt.  We had a bit of a problem trying to decide on a pattern because Lynda doesn't live near me and we were looking at patterns on the Internet.  Some people also have a hard time seeing a pattern in different colours than what is on the cover of the pattern.  We finally came up with Pinwheel Baby Quilt that I found on Moda Bakeshop.  You can find the pattern here.

We chose the fabric, some soft baby prints, when we were in Ottawa in May at Quilty Pleasures Quilt Shop.  That is the shop that we took 3 buses to get to and had some ladies on the bus let us know when to get off so we wouldn't miss our stop.

You will also notice, if you check out the pattern, that I changed it a little.  I thought that prairie points would be sharp for a baby so instead of prairie points around the edge I put a pink flange.   I also put sashing between the blocks to make the quilt a little larger than what the pattern called for.

To tie it all together I cut binding pieces from the quilt colours and sewed them together for the binding.  I sewed the binding to the back (all Pink) and then turned it to the front and top stitched in white to finish the binding.  I like to do that for a baby quilt or a donation quilt since it may be washed a little more than some other quilts.

A New Baby Quilt for 2014

One of our great nieces is expecting a baby January 14 so I have been working on this quilt for her and her new little one.  They know it is a boy so that was the easy part of picking out the fabric.  I found this pattern out there somewhere on the internet but I forgot to copy the website so I can't give the designer credit.  I am really trying hard to do that when I see a pattern but sometimes I forget.  

I had to hang it on my design wall because there is far too much snow

outside to take a picture on my deck and it is

too cold to stand out there anyway.

This morning it was -35 C with a windchill of -45 C.  

I also made a bag to go with it.

I chose the dark blue for the bag

since the baby is a boy and I thought

it would co-ordinate nicely with

the quilt.

Home again

I have been to Southern Ontario visiting my sisters and 2 of my grandchildren.  On the way to visit my oldest sister Carole, Lynda and I stopped at 3 quilt shops.  We went to Norwich to Seven Sisters Quilting, I bought some fabric and another bag pattern.  We  then we travelled to Kitchener to Creative Sisters Quilt Shop.

It was pouring rain so I didn't get a good photo. 

I bought another pattern and some really cute blue fabric

with alphabet letters for my baby quilt that is

kitted and will be started soon.

 We then drove to Guelph to Greenwood Quilts to a large shop where Lynda purchased fabric for me to make a Christmas gift for a friend.

Christmas is coming so I won't be able to post a lot of what I am working on now and will have to take photos and post them after Christmas.

Donation Quilts

A needlework group that I belong to gets together every second Wednesday.  In September we decided that we would make some baby quilts that would go the local hospital.  It was decided that we would work together and bring in different squares to put together to make the quilts.  I made a few but decided that I would make my own small baby quilt too.  I had this fabric with the bears in my stash and put the strips together with the squares.  I finished sewing the binding tonight.

All finished.

I will take to the group after Christmas.
