Some Old Patterns, Some New Patterns

I'm still doing donation quilts but just haven't posted any for a while.  

Two more quilts made with fruits and vegetables.

I mentioned before that fat quarters multiply in the cupboard because I still have more of these fabrics and will probably make more food quilts in the future.

I was looking for something in one of my storage towers and came across these flying geese blocks.  I don't know what I was saving them for so I sorted them because there were two different sizes and added a few more and made two quilts.

The binding is stripped fabric and since I didn't have enough for both, one of the quilts has pieced binding.  Click on the picture to see the different colours.

Amsterdam Quilt

I found the pattern here.  I thought it was very bright and springy.  

Shoo Fly Block and 16 patch block using 2 inch squares.

I save 2 inch squares and put them together to make a 6 1/2 inch square.  This way you can pair them up with any 6 1/2 inch block and make a quilt.

Amber Fields.

I used the same idea as above but used 6 1/2 inch squares of map fabric and then put the same fabric as the border.

Square Deal Quilt

This is from http://www.americanquilter.com/.  If you join their newsletter you get lots of free patterns.  I added borders to make it 36 x 48 inches which is a wheelchair size quilt.

I made this pattern before but never with just three colours.  The last time I made it scrappy.

Today Is National Quilting Day

It was a great day for a Quilt Bee since this is National Quilting Day.  The Quilt Bee Committee did a lot of background work and made up kits for us all to work on.  They found patterns on the Internet from Moda Bakeshop and made a definite effort to find simple easy patterns so that we could finish the quilt top in one day.  There were between 25-30 ladies at the Community Centre working all day except for a wonderful lunch that the Committee supplied.

Who would have thought that blue and green would look so nice together.

What man wouldn't love to have that on his bed.

Green and Purple go well together in this quilt.

So simple but so nice.

Maria and I made this one.  It almost looks tropical.  It is called Interwoven also from Moda Bakeshop.  We were given 5 inch squares and cut them into 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch rectangles and then added a 2 1/2 inch white square.

There were at least 8 or 9 other quilt tops that were worked on at the bee but didn't get finished.

It was a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Cora's Quilt

My sister Lynda has a new granddaughter so of course she needs a new quilt.  We had a bit of a problem trying to decide on a pattern because Lynda doesn't live near me and we were looking at patterns on the Internet.  Some people also have a hard time seeing a pattern in different colours than what is on the cover of the pattern.  We finally came up with Pinwheel Baby Quilt that I found on Moda Bakeshop.  You can find the pattern here.

We chose the fabric, some soft baby prints, when we were in Ottawa in May at Quilty Pleasures Quilt Shop.  That is the shop that we took 3 buses to get to and had some ladies on the bus let us know when to get off so we wouldn't miss our stop.

You will also notice, if you check out the pattern, that I changed it a little.  I thought that prairie points would be sharp for a baby so instead of prairie points around the edge I put a pink flange.   I also put sashing between the blocks to make the quilt a little larger than what the pattern called for.

To tie it all together I cut binding pieces from the quilt colours and sewed them together for the binding.  I sewed the binding to the back (all Pink) and then turned it to the front and top stitched in white to finish the binding.  I like to do that for a baby quilt or a donation quilt since it may be washed a little more than some other quilts.

Another Great Therapy Session on Tuesday

There were just 3 of us this week and a lot was accomplished by all of us.

Pierina's new grand-daughter is going to have a lovely Christmas stocking that she can fill with all kinds of goodies.

She is appliqueing the Santa on and putting

a patch on the toe.

Maria has been working on her letters for Ryan's Max and Whiskers

quilt.

 

 

She is ready to applique now and then add

the piano key border.

 

I am working on my Christmas Cushions and have

the flying geese sewn on to one of the

center squares.

 

I was able to finish both of them

over the week-end.

 

This pattern is from Moda Bakeshop.  I am really

happy the way they turned out.

They are cushion covers that I put over my

living-room cushions and when Christmas

is over I will take them off and revert

back to my regular cushions.

 

They can  be put away for another year.

Quilt Therapy Time Again

Where are the days going.  It has been two weeks since we were together for Therapy and I can't believe how time has flown by. 

We all had a lot of busy days between sessions and didn't get much quilting done so it was good to sit and concentrate and finally see something accomplished.

Joyce is still working on her 8 placemats.  She was able to finish one and then her next step is to quilt the tops and then sandwich and flip them.

Pierina was able to get a lot done on her bibs and even started a new one.

 

For twin girls.

 

Maria is working on her Max & Whiskers quilt.  She hopes to have it done for Christmas.

 

She is getting a lot of letters ready for

the middle of the quilt.

 

I was able to put the binding on my last 2 placemats for Christmas dinner.  I am having 10 for dinner this year and that is a lot for me.

for Christmas.  Here I am trying to

arrange the squares in a pleasing way. 

This is hard to do when there are 15 squares

and 4 colours. I hope to get 2 finished.

I am planning on making them to slip over the

cushions that I have so that I can just change

up the covers for the seasons.
