More Teddy Bear Quilts

I have mentioned here before that our guild supports the Christmas Cheer Fund by making small quilts for teddy bears or stuffed animals.  I have been busy this past week making such quilts.  When I was in Duluth Minnesota at the Minnesota quilt show we also visited quilt shops in town and I found some really neat panels.  These panels had two panels per cut and they were all on sale.  Some of them were only $3, so I think I got a real bargain.

I made 3 of these with the yellow border and then ran out of the yellow so I added blue to the next one.

I bought 2 of these panels and ended up with 4 small quilts by adding borders to them.

I bought one of these panels so I still have one more to make of this design.  So that is 5 in the past week that I finished.

Last spring I made a few more but forgot to post them.  I found this pattern at the Fat Quarter Shop and thought it would make a good teddy bear quilt, so I made two of them.  The pattern doesn't call for borders but that made it a little bigger and perfect for a Teddy Bear.

This is a quilt that I have made before a few times.  It is really easy just half square triangles.

Our possibilities group thought we would try something new and we found and article in the magazine The Canadian Quilter that looked interesting.

It was called "Snip, Rip, Drop, Pass".  We all brought a metre of fabric and followed directions until we had a 5 inch square left.  We were to make a small quilt out of the fabric that we received and we could add a few pieces if we had to.

Two New Teddy Bear Quilts

I hated to cut this fabric so I decided to just put batting and backing on it and quilt it for some teddy bear quilts.  I picked this fabric up at the Creative Festival in April in Toronto. I had some black polka dot fabric that went well with the Dalmatian dogs for the binding.

Two Small Quilts

Every year our guild makes small quilts for Teddy Bears for Christmas Cheer Fund.  These are really neat to make because they are small and don't take a lot of time to make.  I like to piece so I often make a small quilt with a lot of piecing involved.

Baby Buckaroos

I bought an ebook on line from Martingale Publishing and this little quilt was in it.

I bought this fabric a few years ago when I visited my brother in

Tallahassee and didn't realize that it was tailor made for this quilt.  I made some magic 9 patch blocks in red this time.

I had made this quilt before but used blue 9 patches.

I think I like the red better because it sets the fussy cut squares off.

I actually sold this quilt yesterday.

I think it was the first one I have sold since I started quilting 10 years ago.

A friend called and asked if I had a quilt for a boy for her to take to a baby shower this weekend.

More Teddy Bears and Quilts

I have a lot of fun making quilts for my Teddy Bears for our Christmas Cheer Fund.  

I found this rolly polly guy and just couldn't leave him behind.  I thought he was so cute.  This pattern is a disappearing hourglass with the pieces placed in 4 different ways.

This was a free pattern from Wal-mart given to me by one of the ladies at Neebing Needlers.  It is called Pretty in Pink but I had these fabrics with animal prints and matched the quilt to my little aqua penguin.  A good match I think.

My little Christmas Teddy Bear.  When I bought this one my sister insisted that we check to make sure that he had 2 ears.  It is too scary for a little one to get a teddy bear and remove the hat and find only one ear.  I have made this quilt before, and I love the bright colours.  Some of the fabric has animal prints on it.

This quilt is a Sudoku Quilt made with 3 1/2 inch squares so it makes a perfect size for a teddy bear quilt.  The backing has doggie fabric so my little grey and beige dog fit right in with this quilt.

Another Sudoku Quilt made with 2 1/2 squares so I added a border to make it a bit larger and also added dog fabric for the backing.

Christmas Cheer Kick-off

To-day was the Christmas Cheer Kick-off and we delivered 140 stuffed animals or dolls with their own quilt.  These will be given to needy children in our community from Santa and made with love from the Quilter's Guild.

There were three tables of stuffed animals so I took 3 pictures in order to get a good view of them all.  I think there is just about every kind of animal here as well as some dolls.

We had elephants, bears, bunnies, pigs, foxes, lions, and sock monkeys.

There were big animals and small animals in every shape and size.

Another Baby Quilt

My sister Carole asked me to make a quilt for a new great grandson.  She picked out the pattern and the fabric at a local quilt shop in her home town,  The theme is bunnies and I had to asked her to send me new fabric because one of the fat quarters was white with very pale bunnies on it.  It all blended together and was very blah so she sent me the fabric with peach in it and the polka dots.  I like the new fabric better. 

The bunnies are appliqued to the same fabric as the border.  You can see a little bit of snow on the deck.  We were in the middle of a snowstorm but I just had to take the picture outside.  There is also ice on the deck left over from the rain yesterday.

The backing is bunnies that tie the quilt together.

I also made a small quilt 20 x 20 inches for a small stuffed bunny to go with the quilt.

There was still a bit of leftover fabric so I made a bag to put it all in.

Lots of Teddy Bears

Last Monday was Guild night and it was the night that we collected Teddy Bears with quilts for Christmas Cheer Fund.

There were over 100 Teddy Bears or stuffed animals collected for needy children.

They will be delivered to Christmas Cheer kick-off next Friday and I'm sure we will end up with more that what is here.  Some people didn't get theirs finished so we are still collecting and will have a final count on Friday.

Teddy Bear Quilts

If you have read my blog before then you know that our Quilt Guild makes quilts for teddy bears or stuffed animals and gives them to the Christmas Cheer Fund at Christmas time so that they can be given to needy children from Santa.  Last year after Christmas I scoured the stores to find some stuffys and found some really cute ones.

I found this spotted dog and was able to buy some dog fabric with a spotted dog on it so I used it for the cornerstones.

This brown and black dog is so dark around the eyes that they are hard to see.

I made this quilt before and liked it so much that I made it again.

I like the primary colours in this one.

This little brown bear is so soft he is very huggable.

Happy Canada Day

Today is Canada Day.  July 1st 2014 is Canada's 147th birthday. 

We were up at the cabin for the past 4 days because it was Field Day for Amateur Radio and YKW spent the greater part of 2 days on his radio making contacts with other Ham Radio Operators.

I spent my time squaring up some half square triangles that I had put together a while back just for such an occasion.  Sometimes the sewing machine interferes with radio reception because we use a portable generator for our electricity so if I spend my time doing other quilty things then I am not wasting my time. 

I found this block in a book of 100 blocks and it makes a super cute small quilt.

I made one of these before but as you can see I changed the size of the squares so that they are easier to square up if they are finished slightly larger that the 2 1/2 inches that is the square unfinished.

 

The colours I chose with a very pale beige background.

 

This is the other pattern I am working on.  I don't know where I found this one or I would link to it.  It is so easy and it is just half square triangles. I found where you can find this little quilt pattern.  It is here.

 

I had some leftover off white animal footprint fabric and Maria had lots of the blue so mine won't be scrappy but very appropriate for a teddy bear or one of the small stuffed dogs that I have.

Busy, Busy Reunion and Graduation

I haven't blogged for awhile because sometimes life gets in the way.  I am working on a few quilts right now, one is a teddy bear quilt and the other is for my newest great niece, Cora.  I will post them when they are finished.

I went to my 50th Nursing Reunion the beginning of the month and had a wonderful time seeing all my old roommates.  When I was in training we lived in residence so we were all roommates.  We laughed together and cried together.  We celebrated successes and vowed to do better when we had a failure.  There were 75 of us that graduated and 44 showed up at the Alumni dinner where our 50 years was celebrated.

These are the lovely gals that were seated at my table.  We sure don't look like we graduated 50 years ago, we must have all entered nursing when we were 14 years old.  At least that would be nice to think that it was so. Everyone loved the Wonder Wallets that I had made and blogged about in a previous post.  I'm so glad I made them, it will be a nice keepsake for our 50th.

The group of 44

I spent a week in Toronto with my classmate Joanne and had a very relaxing time.  We went out for lunch with Pierina and Mila on Wednesday and then we went to visit Andra and the twins on Thursday and I gave her the quilts I had made for them.  We picked up pizza on the way to Oshawa so that we could grab a quick bite and then we went to watch Dylan play soccer.  The twins are only 4 1/2 so it was great fun to watch them run around chasing the ball and see Dylan trying to score.

One of my classmates and a real good friend, Bonnie, couldn't make it to the reunion because she had to be admitted to hospital.  She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at least 7 years ago and has been through chemo and radiation and is now suffering from blockages in her abdomen from the tumors that keep growing.  The best part was that Tom, Joanne's husband, drove us to Collingwood so that we could have a visit with her in the hospital.  It was so nice to see her.  She looked great but tired easily so we only spent an hour or so with her.  

As soon as I got back from Toronto it was graduation for my grand-daughter Breanne.  That was a full day affair with Mass in the morning at the Cathedral which was followed by a luncheon and then the ceremony at night at the Community Auditorium.

This past week I have been planting my flowers in between the cold weather and the rain drops.  Such fun.  The only thing that rain is good for is to spend the time indoors sewing so that is what I am going to do tomorrow so I can get these two quilts finished.

Christmas Cheer Teddy Bears

Each year our quilt guild makes quilts for Teddy Bears and gives them to the Christmas Cheer Fund.  Many of the ladies buy the bears and make quilts and then we also receive bears from the Teddy Bear Toss when the local University Hockey Team have a fund raiser by having the fans throw bears onto the ice between periods.  

This year there were 109 bears and dolls turned in to the guild.  I was fortunate to be with the group that delivered them to the Christmas Cheer fund today.  

They were all piled onto three long tables.

Teddy Bear Quilts

Every Christmas our Guild makes Teddy Bear Quilts for Christmas Cheer Fund.  The bears are donated or you can buy one and make a quilt for it.  Two of my bears were donated and the black puppy I purchased at Kohl's.  This is a task that has to be done so I like to get it started and finished in good time.  

I used fabric with paw prints on it and the backing 

and borders is cute dogs to match

the little black puppy.

This is another half hexagon quilt.

These quilts are so fast to put together and I had

quite a bit of children's fabric scraps

so I thought it was a good chance to use them up.

The binding and the backing is care bears.

This was a pattern for a doll quilt that I got off the Internet.

It was done in reds but I found some light and dark

mauve to match the little purple bear.

The background is purple penguins.

Quilt Therapy Retreat

This past week the Quilt Therapy Group went on retreat to Hawkeye Lake.  It is a quiet setting with the nearest place behind a bank of trees and we only saw 2 boats on the lake.

We had one day of rain but otherwise we had time for walks and some exercise as well as lots of quilting.  It is great to get away with no husbands, children or grandchildren around and just sit and quilt and get caught up on what has been going on in our lives. We didn't let anything interfere with the task at hand.

We had a large piece of plywood placed on the table which gave us a lot of space to spread out.

Maria quilted the Star Wars Quilt for her grandson.

Joyce finished the quilt top for "Cabin by the Lake"

and started to quilt it.

Pierina finished the ABC quilt for her granddaughter

and started the quilting on it.

Maria and I were making small quilts for teddy bears

for Christmas Cheer Fund.

We are all looking forward to next year when we will do it all again.

My Third Teddy Bear Quilt and Halloween Tablerunner

I am all set for the November Guild meeting.  My third teddy bear quilt is finished and I am really happy with it.  I found this pattern in a magazine and just had to try it.

I used the colours in the quilt 

for the binding.

This table runner is a McCall's Quilting Web Bonus.  I made it a little wider by not trimming it so close to the center square.
