Hexagons and More

I made one of these quilts last year and I cut the fabric for this quilt this past summer while I was at the cabin.  These are so neat because you cut half hexagons and match them up to make whole hexagons.

Hexagon Quilt.

I added half white hexagons along two sides and quarter hexagons on the other sides.  Then I decided that I needed a small border on 2 sides only.  I think it is about 38 x 49 inches.  It looks square but it isn't.  Lots of scraps where used in this quilt.

Dee's Brick Trick

I found this quilt out in cyberspace at the Linus connection and thought that it would make a great scrap quilt, except that the squares were suppose to be 16 inches.  I divided the pieces in half and made 8 1/2 inch squares.  I had to make more squares but I had lots of scraps so it didn't matter.  This quilt is also on Craftsy.  

I have been concentrating on lap quilts about 38 x 50 inches since these are easier for me to quilt.  I have made a few larger ones and since I now know how to use the hinge method I may make them a bit larger.  Dee's Brick Trick was made using the hinge method.  When using this method you can add the borders to your quilt after the quilt is made.  This is great when you finish the quilt and decide that it should be larger so you can add a few borders to accomplish this.  

Falling Triangles Quilt

When I first thought I would make this quilt I chose forty-eight 5 inch squares because I needed forty-eight half square triangles.  After I had them all made I realized that I only needed 24 - 5 inch squares, so now I have another 48 half square triangles that I can use to make another quilt.  I will have to try something different for the next quilt.  I will have to study some patterns and come up with a different quilt.  I may have to add a few since there is a lot of white in this quilt.  

There are so many ideas on Missouri Star Quilt Company if you ever have trouble trying to decide what to make all you have to do is look at a few of the videos.  When she talks charm squares I immediately think scraps.

Scraps to Squares Part 2

I spent last week-end at the cabin with the bugs.  This year has been really bad for mosquitoes, black flies and no-see-ums.  They seem to really love me and always want a piece of me.

YKW was on his radio participating in "The flight of the Bumble Bees" so I took advantage of that and spent my time cutting up scraps into squares and hexagons.  I needed a 2 1/2 inch piece by 5 1/4 inches for my hexagons so I didn't make very many 2 1/2 inch squares.  I thought I might make another hexagon quilt and I need about 200 hexagons so I have been saving the strips to do this. 

Anything less than 2 inches was not used and went into the real scrap bag.

5", 4 1/2", 4", 3 1/2", 3", 21/2", and 2".

I am really into scraps these days.

Half Hexagons.

The pile on the left has matching hexagons so that I can sew them together to make a full hexagon and the pile on the right has single ones and I may make a braid quilt out of them.

The squares were made from the leftover fabric that was not big enough to make a half hexagon.

Three Finishes

I went to the London International Quilt Show in June when I was in London for my grandson's graduation and met a Canadian the vendor named Brenda Miller who sells patterns and accessories under the title "Among Brenda's Quilts".  I purchased 4 patterns and some special batting for bags and have finished making "The Yoga Girl Bag"

It matches the bag that I made to carry my blanket and blocks in when I go to my yoga class.

I am looking forward to classes starting up again in September.  I have been doing aquabics this summer to try to keep in some sort of shape, but miss yoga.

I also was able to finish putting the binding on another of my comfort quilts.

This will be donated to the Guild to go to one of the Homes for the Aged.

The Hexagon Quilt.

I cut all my bindings at 2 1/2 inches so any leftovers were perfect to make hexagons.  This is made entirely of scraps.  I like a scrap quilt to look like 'something' in the end and not just a bunch of scraps thrown together.

I was able to make the place mat pattern that I will be putting in September's Quill Newsletter.  I really like the way it turned out.  I got this pattern off the internet and emailed Alissa and asked her permission to use it and she was more than willing to give her okay for such a good cause.  I have been putting patterns in the newsletter so that the members have some new ideas to make place mats for Meals-on-Wheels.

My New Toy

I've seen this iron on the Internet and just knew that I had to have one.  Jenny from "The Missouri Star Quilt Company" uses one in her tutorials.  Here is a link to them. 

I just love this iron.

It is an Oliso Pro and I bought it from Amazon.com.

You do not stand this iron up, as soon as you take your hand

off of it, it rises off the ironing board;

then when you go to pick it up, the iron becomes flat.

I finished two more small quilts this past week,also.  The tops were made a long time ago but they needed to be quilted and the binding put on them.

This little quilt was made from a charm pack

that I won from Morning Glory Designs.

 I couldn't decide if I wanted to make it bigger or not so I finally decided to leave it the size it was and to use it as a table topper.  It is very fresh looking for the summer on the table.

I used a Hexagon Ruler from Fons and Porter to make this small quilt.  When you use this ruler to make a braid quilt there is no waste because there is no trimming after the strips are made.

I got the pattern also from Fons and Porter but I only made 4 strips instead of 5 that the pattern called for.  This will be a donation comfort quilt for the local Quilters Guild.
