The H Quilt and More Twister

I am having fun using up my scraps from my stash.  I have a lot for someone who has been quilting for only 5 and a half years.  I try to keep them sorted by colour but lately I have been sorting them by size also.  I have a small bucket with 2 1/2 inch squares and one with 2 inch squares.  If the piece of fabric won't make at least a 2 inch square then it goes in the pile for the dog beds, which are made by a group from our Guild.

This will be a donation quilt.

This quilt was suppose to be a puzzle quilt, but I thought that it would be too complicated adding the pieces for the puzzle.  I would have to lay out each piece individually and then add the extra colour, plus I didn't have enough of all of the colours to add the puzzle pieces.  It was easy to just add white to make an H.  Because the H's are turned there was very little matching to do, just the corners had to be matched.

Twister Illusions

I friend of mine created a monster when she taught me how to do the twister block.  This is a block that looks so complicated but is easy to do and it looks like you spent hours piecing small pieces together.

One of our local quilt shops was going out of business and I found the pattern one day while looking for bargains.  Most of the fabrics were in my stash but I had to purchase the blues and the black.  I have chosen a very special friend to get this quilt.

Twister Illusions

The pattern made a crib, twin or queen size quilt so I made this one a size between the crib and twin, by starting with the crib size and adding borders that were meant for the twin size.  I really like the corner detail.  Only 2 corners were suppose to have coloured squares but I added some to all four corners.  I really love this quilt.

YKW had just finished shovelling the latest snowfall off the deck so it was the perfect place to take the picture.  I prefer to take the pictures outside in the natural light if at all possible.

A New Twister Placemat

Last Christmas the local Guild members exchanged some 5 inch squares and we were suppose to make a placemat for Meals on Wheels to give to their clients.  I couldn't figure out what to make until last week.  I added a few squares and made a Twister Placemat.

Quilt Therapy Tuesday

Tuesday is now Therapy day and we had a lot to share.  There 4 of us have been doing a lot of quilting lately and we haven't been able to get together and we like to have a show and tell session before we start for the day.

Joyce finished her placemats - 8 of them.

Beautiful wine fabric.

These placemats have no binding,

they are quilted on the batting

then the backing is sewn on

and flipped over to the right side.

 

This gorgeous fabric was purchased on her

trip to Southern Ontario.

She likes the above pattern so much that

she is now making 8 more placemats.

cute cat fabric that Colleen picked out when

we were in Duluth a few weeks ago.

I'm on a roll

I have another UFO finished.  I started this wall hanging in July at our retreat and put it aside because other things needed attending to.  I am trying to get my Christmas sewing done and finished so that it can be mailed off and figured I had better finish this up first.

My friend Joyce made the bow for me.

I can't tie bows but she sure can.

I am going to hang it on my front door

in December,

to make my house look Christmassy.

Mystery Quilt and My New Helper

Last spring the local guild had a mystery quilt for us to try.  It came in 3 sizes and I chose the smaller one but it wasn't quite big enough so I added an inside border.  It now measures 41 x 51, and I think it is a nicer size for a lap quilt.

By adding the border the same colour as the background

it makes the other parts and the stars

appear to float on the background.

I also have a new helper.

This is Banshee.

We are minding my sons cats for a few months

and she follows me around.

I am working on this Twister Christmas Wreath

and she seems to like it too.

It doesn't seem to matter where I am she wants to be

near me or on my lap.

It is hard to type with a kitten on your lap.

and he is not allowed

since they just moved here.

Another Finish

I finished my grandson's quilt top the other day and took it to the long arm quilter.  Since the pattern looks like pinwheels she quilted it with circles to give the impression of the pinwheels moving.

The borders are on the Twister

I was able to put the borders on the twister quilt today.  It has been very hot here around 33C with a Humidex in the 40's so I have been spending time in the basement in the air conditioning and doing lots of quilting.

Now I have to find some backing

and then it can go to the

long arm quilter.

It is 69 x 83

Twister Quilt

I couldn't wait to get going and finish this twister quilt.  So today I sewed the borders on so that I could start cutting it out.

I chose a multi coloured gold border.

I used the 8" twister ruler, a lead pencil,

and a Fons and Porter Ceramic pencil

to make the markings.

You can see the markings on the squares

The next steps are very crucial for it to work out correctly.

1.  The whole quilt has to be marked before you start to cut.

2.  You cut out one row at a time and sew it together.

3.  Then you sew each row together when they are finished.  Otherwise it will be almost impossible to put it together.

I have 4 rows completed.

Isn't this amazing.

Home from the Quilt Retreat

I arrived home yesterday from a wonderful 3 days of quilting with 3 wonderful friends.  We took time out to eat and have afternoon tea and we even enjoyed the hot tub.

My vehicle was so loaded down.

It didn't take us long to get the machines

set up and get to work

on our projects.

Joyce was making a Bed Scarf and

she had a nice screen room to

do use for cutting.

I think I have gone twister crazy.

Making Luggage Tags

The other day when we were at the cabin there were 4 small rabbits putting on a show for us.  They were feeding in the yard and then all of a sudden they would start to chase each other and then stop!, just the game we played as children called statue.  We got the biggest kick out of them.  I got a picture of one of them.

YKW has his Amateur Radio Licence so while he was on the radio I was sewing, making luggage tags of the grandchildren.

Tonight I was laying out the squares for my new Twister Quilt.  These are 10inch squares that I bought at the Cotton Yard in Osseo, WI.  After I sew them together I will use the Twister template and cut them out and then resew them.  The kit made a small quilt 62 x62 but I wanted one for a twin bed so I went to the new quilt shop in town, "The Circle of Friends" and purchased a few fat quarters so that I had 48 - 10 inch squares.

I had to use my Living room floor.

I didn't have any other space

that was big enough.

It Has Been Very Busy These Last Few Days

I finished my twister placemat and also made a small doll quilt. 

This little quilt is for a bunny and

will be given to

The Christmas Cheer Fund in December.

Last Friday we left to go to the cabin because the 2 small roofs needed to be re-shingled.  The main roof was done last June.  No. 1 son and YKW worked on them both and had them done in 2 days.  They were long days and and it was hot.



A lot of hard work being done.

I stayed inside and did some sewing.

I have to quilt it now and will

post a final picture then.
