New Door Hangings

A few years ago a blog that I follow had a block of the month and it was seasonal door hangings.  I had completed all of them but had not quilted them.  This February I decided that I needed a new one for my front door and I should finish one for St. Valentine's day.  When I went through the ones that I had I noticed one for St. Patrick's day also so I decided to finish both of them off.

The hearts appear to be coming out of the envelope.

I needed a new one for my front door and this was so cute.

The Hinge Method Workshop

The day before I left for Ottawa I took a class from Jackie Black who has developed a new method of joining squares together.  The completed squares are quilted and then joined together with sashing strips.  She calls it the Hinge Method.

Add sashing to the front and back of the strip.  I used a 1/2 inch seam allowance so that I wouldn't lose my points in my blocks.

After that zig zag the 2 blocks together.

Sew the hinge to the second block.  I sewed the hinge with a straight stitch although it could also be sewn with a fancy stitch.  You have to catch the hinge on the backing side and sometimes this is easier with a fancy stitch or a zig zag stitch.

One really exciting thing that I took away from this class is how to add borders to an already quilted quilt.  

So the next time I finish quilting a quilt and haven't added the binding but decide that I would like to make it larger I know how to add another border.

Apple Avenue Quilts Block of the Month

I finished my Apple Avenue Quilts Block of the Month and it is ready to be posted.  I should have taken better care of how I made the blocks each month and what fabrics and colours I used because when it was finished I didn't like the way it looked when I arranged it by the months.  Each block represents a month of the year so I scattered the blocks and liked the layout better.

 On the upper left corner is January depicted by a snowflake and February is the heart block but I think they look better separated with the green shamrocks for March in the middle.

April starts the next row then June in the middle and then pink tulips for May. 

On the lower right is the July block and it should be an American flag, but since I am a Canadian I put a red maple leaf on a white background waving in a blue sky as the star points and background.

It measures 52 x 66.  One down and 8 to go.

Lots of finishes in October, getting ready for November

I have been waiting too long for the blocks to finish my Ireland Quilt so I decided to do my own thing for a few of the blocks.  I will wait a little while longer to see what the last blocks look like and if they don't get posted soon then I will do another one to finish that quilt.

I also made a Casserole Carrier.  I thought I might make a few for Christmas gifts so I made one for myself to try the pattern out.  I changed the pattern by putting binding around the pieces instead of flipping them inside out and used webbing for the handles instead of fabric.

I also made 4 placemats for a friend that I do yoga with twice a week.

I used a pattern from Atkinson Designs book I have.

She wanted burgundy and black so I combined

the burgundy with beige and used black

for the backing and binding.

I am busy doing Christmas projects which I will post after Christmas and I have finished most of my September blocks. 

This door hanging I made is actually

called O Canada but I thought

autumn leaves would look really

nice on it too.

Getting Caught Up

I was so far behind on my BOM's that I spent the last 2 days doing nothing but blocks.  YKW was up at the cabin and I was alone at home with outside temperatures too hot to enjoy.  So what does one do under these circumstances?   Well you sew, if you are me.  The temperatures the past few days were in the 30C range with humidex around 37C.  Far too hot to be out and about.

Tomorrow Is A New Month

Tomorrow is a new month with new blocks to be downloaded and sewn so I have been busy finishing up this months blocks.  Some of my blocks come out at different times of the month or week so it seems I always have new ones to make.

Six More Blocks Finished

I am trying to keep up with all my BOM's as well as do other projects and I am not doing too badly. I have 6 more finished and only one more to be completed for June. It is only the 10th so I think I am well ahead of the game. My alphabet blocks come out every week and I am waiting for the partner block before I start the letter so I have L now and it's partner will be out on Thursday.

Country Junk'tion June Block

I just have Apple Avenue block for June to finish, and I should have that finished up tomorrow.

I have done it!!! I started a ninth BOM

I have contemplated starting this new BOM and finally decided to do it.  I chose to use 2 colours instead of scrappy and I may have to add a third colour depending on the blocks that come in the next months.  I used the alternate method of making half square triangles and found that the blocks went together so fast that I made 5 blocks in the past 2 days.


I took a 4 1/4 inch dark square and paired it with a light square and sewed all around the outside of the square.

4 1/4 inch square sewn around the edge.

Cut it on the diagonal, for 4 half square triangles.

I separated them to show the 4 pieces.

Ready to be trimmed to 2 1/2 inches

All trimmed and ready to be sewn.
